Handwriting as a Duke of Edinburgh Skills Activity
Handwriting is a practical, measurable skill for the Duke of Edinburgh Skills section at Bronze and Silver level. The Magic Link Handwriting Programme uses a structured 30-step method to improve speed, fluency, legibility and confidence.
Ideal for secondary school pupils, it also provides valuable preparation for GCSEs and other written examinations. With around 40 teachers across the UK and online availability internationally, teenagers can access expert handwriting support.
Please check with your DofE Leader before booking.
How It Works
Pupils follow the 30-step Magic Link Joined Cursive Programme with support from a trained Magic Link teacher. There are two ways to take part:
1) UK PUPILS – FACE TO FACE LESSONS
Find your nearest Magic Link teacher for face-to-face lessons and apply directly.
The programme is usually taught over 12 lessons across three months, meeting the three-month Skills requirement for the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award or can be extended over six months to meet the Silver Skills Duke of Edinburgh requirement.

Why Handwriting Works as a Skills Activity
✔ Structured and measurable: The programme follows 30 carefully structured steps, allowing pupils to demonstrate clear progress throughout the course.
✔ Clear evidence of improvement: Before-and-after handwriting samples provide an easy way to demonstrate progress for the DofE Skills section.
✔ Develops speed and fluency: Pupils learn to write more efficiently and comfortably, helping them cope with longer pieces of written work.
✔Supports GCSE preparation: Clear, fluent handwriting is particularly important in timed examinations and essay-based subjects such as English, History and Humanities.
✔ Builds confidence: As handwriting becomes easier and more automatic, pupils can concentrate more fully on what they want to say rather than the mechanics of writing.
UK Research Supporting Handwriting for Teenagers
✔ Handwriting strengthens learning and organisation Research from the University of Cambridge shows that handwriting activates brain areas linked to memory, planning and deeper learning – all vital for GCSE preparation.
✔ Improved fluency builds confidence Durham University’s Centre for Evaluation & Monitoring (CEM) highlights that handwriting fluency is closely connected to writing confidence and resilience – key outcomes for the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
✔ Clearer handwriting improves exam results The Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) notes that handwriting must be legible for examiners to award marks accurately. Students with slow or unclear writing often struggle in timed exams, especially in essay subjects such as English, History and Humanities.
✔ The National Handwriting Association confirms that handwriting improves through structured teaching and repeated practice, aligning perfectly with DofE aims.
